Italian Kingdom joins the Entente

For over a year now, the Italians had been fighting WWI on the side of the Triple Alliance, fighting alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary against the British and French forces. The Italian front was especially brutal, with much fighting taking place in the Julian Alps and along the Dalmatian Coast. The Italians had originally sided with the Germans in 1882, and were constantly analyzing the different alliances to determine which side would have the best advantage. When WWI began, Italy was declaring itself neutral to avoid collateral damage. They joined the Germans, but realized the British would ultimately be successful and then, on May 23, 1915, joined the Entente forces. Italy also joined the Entente because the British and French promised Italy the regions of Tyrol and Trieste if they were victorious. Italy took the bait and switched sides. The rest of the war alongside the British would be hard and brutal, with nightmarish fighting and casualties along the Isonzo River and the Alps that bordered Italy and Austria Hungary.

The Treaty of London, signed May 23 1915, saw Italy switch onto the side of the eventual winners of WWI. It would change the progress of the war along the Italian Front, and would produce some of the most intense and gruesome fighting for the next three years.
